Isaiah 57:5 "Enflaming yourselves with idols under every green tree, slaying the children in the valleys under the clifts of the rocks?" Ezekiel 16:21 "That thou hast slain my children, and delivered them to cause them to pass through the fire for them?" God condemned Israel for sacrificing their infants inpagan worship to the false gods/goddesses of fertility (Molech and Ashtorah). Their worship involved immoral acts as well as the sacrifice of innocent babies. This practice has been compared to our infanticide in the ghastly procedure known as a dilation and extraction (D&X) -- also known as "partial birth" abortion. On March 13, 2003, the U.S. Senate voted 64-33 to approve a ban on the partial birth abortion procedure. After years of debate and political meandering, the United States House and Senate have finally passed a ban on this horrific late term abortion procedure and this time there is no danger of a presidential veto. The measure bans dilation and extraction procedures after 20 weeks of gestation and includes an exemption if the woman's life is in danger. The vote is the third attemt to get the bill signed into law. Over the past seven years, the Senate and House passed two previous bans, only to have them shamelessly vetoed by President Clinton. Co-sponsor Se. Rick Santorum (PA) described the procedure in detailonthe Sanate floor, saying although partial birth abortions are performed over 2,200 times a year, it is "never medically necessary, not taught in any medical school in this country, (and) not recommended." Opponents say the bill's purpose is to eventually make abortion illegal, and are looking ahead of a presidential endorsement to a court fight in the future. Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) said, "it's an attempt to...criminalize abortions. And what follows from there? Women and doctors would be in jail." When anyone looks at this horrific procedure it raises the obvious question, "How can abortion proponents (or anyone) defend the indefensible?" A side benefit of this effort is that it shows the medical people how radical the abortion movement is. Pollsters credit the partial birth abortion debate as helping to shift public opinion on abortion in the U.S. over the last half dozen years. President Bush issued a statement hailing the vote to prohibit the "abhorrent procedure that offends human dignity." "Today's action is an important step toward building a culture of life in America." Bush said. In a statement, U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy Thompson also congratulated members of the Senate. "Every child is a precious gift, and a civilized society recognizes and protects these gifts." Thompson said. "Outlawing this gruesome procedure that offends the conscience will be a great step for the health, safety and dignity of all Americans." We should offer prayers of thanksgiving that this horrific procedure has finally been banned in our nation. We need to also pray that Godly men and women would be appointed and approved by the Senate to fill the vacancies in our court system.
