| Jerry's
Musing by Jerry Vegter (My husband and I have known Jerry and Dianne Vegter for over twenty-five years. They are God-honoring friends of His, and they are precious friends to all who know their names. It is a privilege to know and love them, to have worked in the local church beside them, and to have Jerry be a part of this web site. ~~Sharon) Jerry's MusingColossians 3:17 "Whatsoever (anything) ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him" Howdy. I'm a "new kid on the block." A good and kind friend asked if I was interested in writing some articles for this web site. I humbly replied that I thought myself inadequate, and did not feel that I could contribute. She re invited me. Said I could write on most anything. Anything! For me, that is probably the hardest assignment that anyone could possibly give to me! Some where, in my past, I distinctly remember someone saying to me, "You don't know much about anything!" There you have it. It was cold, and it was harsh, but they said it with such conviction, I had to give it some credence. How can I possibly write anything about anything when I don't know much about anything! You somehow sensed that I was going to try, didn't you!? The word "whatsoever" in the Greek means "anything." (It always sounds better when you make people think that you are familiar with the Greek.) So, let me take the word, anything, and run with it. I have heard of youthful lovers saying to their beloved, "I will do anything for you," and they mean it. They are willing to do stupid and dangerous acts of courage to display their allegiance and love to this sweet, little darling! Fifteen years and thirty pounds later (the wife, Silly) Mr. Lover Boy can't find the strength to get his wife a drink of water. His ardent love has cooled to a lower temperature than the water. Now, don't go pointing your finger at me--I'll get my wife a cup of water...maybe not as quickly, maybe not as enthusiastically, but I'll get the water. Grip! Not out loud! Actually, I'm pretty good about doing things for the little wifee, with the exception of my sandwich! Why do wives always want a bite of your sandwich when your sandwich is exactly the amount needed for your own personal nourishment. Yes. When we were dating I would have smiled while she nibbled away most of the sandwich, but, good grief, I was still trying to convince her to be my wife! After your married, you make her a sandwich--make her ten sandwiches, but yours is reserved for you and you alone! (I love to dig holes! There isn't a hole I can't break out of! My nickname is Houdingybat. When you have been given an invitation to write about anything, and it may be your one and only chance to write, you "let it rip!") As I recall, anything I asked, within a mile of reason, Dianne agreed to. How many gals would agree to make her man homemade bread...for life? It was part of our marriage vows! Just kidding! (You are beginning to see the importance and significance of My Sandwich! We know that man does not live by bread alone. Still, it is a biggie!) First time she tried, she killed the yeast, dead! To her credit, she stayed with it, and honestly, for thirty years I have been "rollin' in the dough!" (I'm just about out of the hole.) Her weight is just about the very same as the day we were married! (I'm out-a there! Back on top!) Anything my wife promised, she kept! Twelve loaves at a crack, and when our two boys were home, twice a month. That spells love! You are thinking, "Can anything good come of this?" I best not comment on that! Go ahead Perhaps that oft' repeated phrase, "Anything you say may be used against you,"should be considered. With every sentence, you are forming opinions about me. Oh Boy! How about those embarrassing times when you heard that little voice say, "But, Daddy, remember what you said!?" Those little minds never stopped working, and what they were able to figure out, all by themselves, was amazing! Those antagonistic coworkers are good at recalling what you said in the past, that isn't measuring up at the present moment. We have all, in our fervor and enthusiasm for Christ, unwisely said, "I
will do anything for you, Lord." Truth is, that after the initial excitement,
we have a hard time being faithful to read His Word, much less all that His
Word requires of us. All of our I just don't know of anything else to write. If I happen to think of anything else I'll make a feeble attempt to keep it to myself! Jerry V. |
