Genesis

Genesis 20 - Trust in God

"And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister: and Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah." (Genesis 20:2 KJV)

This is the second time Abraham told a king that Sarah was his sister, and not his wife. The first was in Egypt, where Pharaoh's house was plagued by God (Gen 12: 11-13), and the second was here, in Gerar. It seems he did not yet learn to trust the Lord in all things. Abraham feared man more than God at this point, risking the honor of his wife to preserve his life! Fortunately, as God always does, He interceded and the situation did not get out of hand, (both times!). We pass through "enemy territory" every day of our lives, but we need to trust that God loves us enough to keep us safe, and on the right track. How often we try to deliver ourselves with mans means, lies and schemes and deceit, but only God can truly "deliver us from evil," only He has the ability, the right to do so!

What do you trust in for protection? A gun? Your wits? Whatever it is, give it up! Trust in the Lord with all your heart, for all your needs. We too often replace Him in some area of our lives with something else we prefer to trust in. Welfare helps many to do this. Don't we know that God wants to be our "welfare"? Don't replace His grace and mercy with some other "god"; don't depend on this worlds means or goods for your comfort or strength, or security, or peace, or anything else! Don't you know that God wishes to be all these unto you? He has a right to be those things unto us too, moreso than anyone, or anything else in this world. God kept Pharaoh from sinning against him, as He did with Abemelech, and as He does with us! Trust Him, He will not let you down.
