Hosea 4:6

The Knowledge of God

"My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children." (Hosea chapter 4:6)

Our text verse says it all, we are "destroyed for lack of knowledge." First, note that God is talking to His people, and not the heathen Gentiles that we like to apply this to. Yes, we, as God's people, reject knowledge. How? By neglecting the fountain of knowledge, which is His Word. Because we are so prone to neglect The Word of God, He will reject us as priests before him, and certain privileges will be lost, and as we increase we forget about Him, and look to self and "things" of this world (v.7). We destroy our lives and our testimonies, when we reject the knowledge of God, and, as the old song says, "to know Him is to love Him." This is where the verse finds its force, in the fact that we don't know Him because we don't love Him enough, and our heart is set on iniquity (v.8).

Taking this thought a step further, we obey Him because we love Him (John 14:15), Jesus said, "If you love me keep my commandments." Do you love the Lord? If so, you will obey Him, and have a desire to know Him better. Too many times we are too lazy to take the time to read His Word, yet we seem to find time for many other things we wish to do. You see, the motivation is our love for Him, so, again we can say, we destroy ourselves because we don't love Him enough to get to know Him intimately, personally. We need to set a time every day to spend with Him, (don't we like to spend time with those we love?), and we need His Word more than we need the air we breath, or the food we eat. Read His Word, and learn to love Him, and schedule a time every day for Him, then let your schedule be your master.
