The record of plagues, of Israel’s flight;
The laws of the order, of worship in Truth,
The book of wanderings in Israel’s youth.

The rule of the priesthood, not so odd;
The order of sacrifice, the book of feasts,
The tale of the scapegoat, and such lowly beasts.

The annals of God, chosen men a-vex;
The numbering of the people aright,

Repetitious of Exodus, given to all;
The law of Moses, the “Pentateuch”

Delivered by God with a mighty hand;
The book of wars, of Israel’s sons,

Who freed the captives from Midians’ den;

All subdued by Israel, with the Ammonites.

Tells of a Moabite in her youth;
Naomi’s “friend” becomes a wife,
To Boaz, the wealthy sustainer of life.
Samuels, the first books of the kings,
Of Saul, and David, their valor rings;
The battles fought, the victory sought,
The evil wrought, the villains caught.
Then Kings, the books of Israel’s shame,
The leaders who seemed e’er the same;
Some were evil, some were good,
The prophets of God were misunderstood.
The Chronicles of kings, first and second,
The acts they did, the thoughts they reckoned;
The royal line, their heritage told,

Longing the city of David to see;
The city he began to erect,

She gave the Israelites again their place,
And cast Haman down in total disgrace.

With accusing friends and no “helping hand;”
Stayed the storms of life’s most tragic woes,
And discovered his friends were really his foes.
Psalms, those songs, so rich and sweet,
Speak of the wondrous Creator’s seat;
Resplendent with Holy chords of joy,
Do precious verses of prose employ.

Full of advice for the young and the old;
Poetic yet profound, none can compare,
The book of books, a gift so rare.

Called also “Canticles” in days of old;
The descriptive language, “my little dove,”

Into life’s wisdom he gives us a look;
The wisdom is of a very wise man,

Had a vision of God on a street of gold;
Told of an anointing of the Spirit of God,
His practical holiness on this earth of sod.

Preached to all Israel, not one heart to touch;
But kept on going, day after day,

Of mans evil ways, his troublesome fate;
A book of weeping, of judgment of sin,
A book of sorrow for the shape we’re in.

Lost his wife one night, ‘twasn’t long,
Before he was out preaching again,

Dared to defy the gods of stone;
Risked his life in a lion’s den,

To be an example, by his exemplary life;

Could not walk with two or three,
Who travel different roads, go different ways,

Swallowed by a whale, a mighty big one!
Went and preached to Ninevah’s host,
Then pouted when they didn’t give up the ghost!

He told of Bethlehem, the place of Christ’s birth,
Of God’s redemption for the people of earth.

A long, beautiful prayer, song-like in praise;
He said “The just shall live by his faith”,

As an innocent, sweet little waif;
Though his message is powerfully true,
Of Israel’s trouble when God is all through.
Haggai so full of energy needed,
Persuading the lethargic Jews who heeded;
Got on the move, and built God’s house,
And proved himself a man instead of a mouse!
Zechariah The prophet and priest,
Spoke of Messiah, to say the least;
Deeply concerned about his royal roots,
He preached to the people in sins lowly suits.
Malachi this last Old Testament Book,
Into God’s heart it gives us a look;
Would one rob God, as many do?
The tithe is His, and the offerings too.
