Titus 2 Men And Women

Pursuing Peace
by Pastor Jeff Haney

"Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompense for reward." Hebrews 10:35

I have found that one of the most common problems that believers struggle with is doubt. Many people battle a persistent, yet sporatic attack of insecurity that peppers life, with continual frustration, aggravation and humiliation. These people have a constant fear that they don't know what they think they know, and toy with the thought that they will never know their state until after their death, which can be a terrorizing and agonizing way to live. Their life consists if constant pursuit of peace.

Very briefly, I want to encourage you with some causes and comforts to those who the Devil's Doubts have robbed your Believer's Boldness. What happens when a believer isn't sure he believes?

The first thing we need to look at in the life of someone who "believes in Jesus", yet doubts if he is saved is this "doubt."

Most believers who doubt, do not doubt that Christ is the only Son of God and only sacrifice for their sins, but what they really doubt is their "ability" to believe. Internally they are plagued with the question, "Do I believe in the same way the Bible says to believe?" When you ask this question in your heart, I want you to see what is happening to you. You are now placing your trust in your trust. "Your "ability to trust" is never to be the object of your trust, Jesus is. The question is, are you Trusting yourself to Trust, or are you Trusing the Saviour to Save?

Now realize this, the Holy Spirit will convict you of your lack of faith, but the Hellish spirit will derail your Object of faith. When you called on Christ to save you and you meant it, you were signed sealed and delivered, not because you had the "knowledge of an angel", but becasue He said He would save those who called and meant it. (Romans 10:9-13) When you believe in Christ as your Saviour and still doubt if you're saved, you are doubting His Word. You can't trust Christ and not be saved, because He has said so.

The second thing that I want you to realize is this, you are saved by faith not by knowledge. One reason that many people doubt is because their "standard of faith" is basically elevated to the level of knowledge, or experience. Faith is on the front end, it is not hindsight. What many people really are demanding is to go to Heaven, look around, take pictures, sign a contract, have it notarized, certified, analyzed and filed at the courthouse. That's not faith, that's knowledge, that's experience. Our assurance is to never come from experience or feelings, but from His Word. They doubt their faith because it doesn't measure up to knowledge or experience. Heaven is not our history but our future, and our faith is in the One who said so.

Thirdly, many people doubt for no other reason than that they entertein it. The Hebrew writer said clearly "Cast not away therefore your confidence." If you are going to entertain the devil's dialogue, never be surprised when you are overcome with doubt. When you meditate on the "possibility" that even though you trust Jesus, you're still lost, you shouldn't be taken back when your thoughts of "possibility" change to "probability" and you become so scared you don't even know your own name. When you mentally dance with the devil, you spiritually will question your confidence in Christ. When you lay down with the dogs you get up withthe fleas.

Finally, people doubt their salvation because they don't know the Word of God. Because a person who is saved is sin sensitive, and because as you are conformed to the image of Christ, your flesh resists the Spirit, you encounter Sin struggles in your life, and falsely conclude, "I shouldn't be battling with this", when the fact of the matter is that as a saved person, yes you should. Yes, when you are saved, your lifestyle of sin should change. As one preacher said, Instead of running to it, you now are running from it. However, take comfort in the fact that now you wish that you didn't sin, instead of justifying your actions. The sin struggle is a wonderful sign that the Saviour is at home in your heart.

For those who are pursuing peace, your comfort is in Christ Jesus who saved all who have called upon Him and meant it.

May God increase your Faith!
