Why are the Names of God often spelled differently?

I have wondered about this for years and finally asked my pastor.

The spellings of the various names of God differ from time to time simply because they are variations of the same name.

We have the same type of thing in English:

Robert	Rob	Robb
David	Davida	Davide	Dave
Sharon	Sherren
Gail	Gayle	Gale
Moses	Moshie	Moshe
Ezekiel	Zeke

No one form is more correct than another. They are all derivatives of the same root word.
