When I first started preparing this lesson I thought ‘Why should being a father be a problem?’ Then I read that many men fear fatherhood. How can anyone fear an infant? Then it struck me--it isn’t the child; it’s the responsibility. Now I’m not minimizing motherhood but let’s look at the God given responsibilities of Fatherhood. I Cor 11:3 But I would have you to know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of every woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God. Eph. 5:23 for the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: Husband/father is the head of the home. Unfortunately many men relinquish their authority in the home. Many have never seen godly male leadership in the home and don’t know how to lead. Many of us strong-willed women don’t easily allow our husbands to be the head of the home. Many men don’t want the responsibility and somebody has to do it. Josh. 24:15 Choose ye this day whom ye will serve but as for me and my house we will serve the Lord. Leadership, stedfast and consistent. It is impossible to stand firmly without being deeply grounded in doctrine and discipleship. How can a man lead that doesn’t know what he believes? Then there are the followers, how can a man lead that has no followers? Dad says ‘do this’ and Mom says ‘Oh, that’s all right. I’ll do it for you.’ Dad says ‘No’ and Mom says ‘Yes’ The kids soon learn how to pull the strings and get their own way. I Timothy 5:8 But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse that an infidel. No question about what that verse says. God expects the father to be the principle breadwinner in the home. That certainly doesn’t mean that a wife can’t or shouldn’t work but it does mean the husband should work. A father that doesn’t work or who isn’t able to keep a job is eroding the very foundation of his home. II Cor. 8:21 Providing for honest things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men. I Peter 2:13 Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake Honesty, who better then the children of a home know how honest their parents are? You know we don’t lie but are we honest? Do we pad the business expenses? Does 55-mph mean 55 or does it mean the police won’t ticket you if you aren’t driving more then 10 mph over the speed limit? How about the put the checks in the wrong envelopes to allow more time for the money to reach the bank? How big was that fish? What did the deer weigh? So many exaggerations that are acceptable in our society do not translate into honesty in the eyes of a child.
