As you read these Bible lessons I would like you to remember Psalm 66:18, "If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me". Then pray Psalm 139: 23 & 24, "Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting". Every girl dreams of becoming a bride. She makes her plans carefully. Usually as a young teenager she can tell you what color dresses her bridesmaids will wear, what kind of bouquet she will carry, and how many layers there will be in the wedding cake. She is going to wear a beautiful dress, be the center of attention for the day and be legally able to have sex. Someday she will become a mother. Does this sound familiar to any of you? Along the way someone should tell girls that brides become wives. Most young women enter marriage without ever thinking about the responsibilities of being a wife. Did you think about having the privilege of picking up and laundering his dirty socks and underwear for the rest of your life? Did you consider that it was going to be your job to plan, cook, and clean up after 14 or more meals every week? I’m sure you never thought of smelly feet or morning breath. Sadly, most women enter marriage very ill prepared. I have known young women that had never cooked a meal or washed a load of laundry before they married. Why did you marry? Were you hoping to escape a bad home situation? Was it the socially accepted thing to do? Perhaps your reason was simply lust or you may have already been pregnant. Do you feel the same way today that you did when you married? Have your feelings changed? Just what is a wife? Let’s start at the beginning. Genesis 2:18, "And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet FOR HIM". (emphasis mine) The Hebrew word TOWB, which is interpreted ‘good’ in this verse, is interpreted in other Bible passages as other words. I’m going to use the word NOT before each of these to tell you how God saw man without a help meet. Not beautiful, not best, not better, not bountiful, not cheerful, not at ease, not fair, not fine, not glad, not good, not gracious, not joyful, not kindly, not loving, not merry, not pleasant, and the list goes on. In other words, God sees man as a wreck without a wife! Now let’s look at the Hebrew word that is used in the text for help meet. EZER, which interprets into English as aid, surround, protect, and succor. Webster’s dictionary defines surround as enclose on all sides, encompass, environ, and encircle. In other words, God created a woman to complete a man. Your job as a wife is not to change him but to complete him. Genesis 2:24, "Therefore shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave unto his wife (permanence) and they shall be one flesh". (Unity, complete perfection) Do you really believe that the two of you are one? It is essential that you believe God meant it when He said one flesh. Think about it realistically, two people, from different backgrounds, different levels of acceptance, different habits are going to fall in love and everything will be bliss and joy. Dating is good behavior time but marriage is reality time.
