Psalm 90:10 The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; God does intend for men to work. Beginning with Adam God has expected men to work. Men have traditionally been the breadwinners in Western society. But how do men look at their work? The difference in the way men and women view their work is a major factor in a marriage. In some countries and at various times in our country the emphasis of society on a man was "get a job, work hard, support your family" and this is scriptural. I Tim 5:8 But if any provide not for his own, and especially those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel. Some of us are old enough to remember when having a job was more important then what the job was. That earning a wage was more important then following your dream. A time when 8 hours of actual work for 8 hours pay was the norm. In our affluient society, young people are told to dream big, to follow their dreams. They are told that to be happy they need clothes, cars, perfume, hair spray, and liquor. They are inundated with advertising that their self-worth is based on the toys they can acquire. To be competative, to accept nothing less, to meet their full potential. While girls have some of these pressures, they’re much more intense for boys/men. Stop and think for a moment. When a woman is asked to introduce herself what does she say? Usually her reply is something along the lines of; I’m Sally the wife of Jim and we have 3 kids, Jimmy, Beth, and Taylor. Oh, and I’m a bank teller. How did you end up with the job you have? Was this job a planned career that you had dreamed of as you grew up and considered college? Is this a job that you would have trouble walking away from? How does a man introduce himself? Usually his reply will sound something like; I’m Jim and I’m a teacher. I’m married and we have 3 kids. My wife’s name is Sally. His personal identity is securely wrapped in his career. Obviously not all men do the same work. God has created men with different talents, skills, and abilities. Did your husband have someone in his life that prayed for him as he grew up? Someone that prayed that God would lead him and use him? Someone that asked God to direct him to a job that would use his unique personality, talents, and skills to give your husband a sense of fulfillment, purpose and self esteem? You can not be his mother or grandmother, but you can be his prayer warrior. And while you are at it, it’s not too soon to start praying for the boys and girls that are growing up somewhere right now that will someday be your child’s spouse.
