We were joking on the church bus recently about being able to read our husband’s minds. Sometimes we just know what he is thinking or about to say, not because we are psychic but because of experience. How far does your experience reach? Do you know his mind? Do you also know his fears?

I’m sure that all of you have heard TV talk shows, or discussions about negative, exaggerating, and defeating words. Words like ever, always, and never, can’t, don’t and won’t.  When you realize how demoralizing and defeating these words are to a child or in our personal relationships; imagine how they echo around your husband’s mind when Satan whisper’s in his ear "You can’t do that. You not you’re no good."  Oh, the anguish of a grown man that can’t cry out in need or pain.

We need to recognize the difference between our God given instinct (fear) of danger and Satan playing with our minds. We will have difficulty seeing Satan’s attacks on our husbands’ minds as long as we allow Satan to paralyze us with doubts and fears.

Think about your husband specifically, do you really understand the battle he has with his mind?  The Lord has shown me this week that I often really miss the mark in this area. Many times we tend to blame things on his temperment, his up bringing, his lack of spirituality or we don’t recognize that he even has a problem. We fail to see that the problem is Satan’s attack on our husband’s mind.

Let me give you some examples: I know a young man who struggled with depression for over a year. The depression worsened until the man was barely functioning. He would forget to eat and there was a radical change in his habits. Things that used to make him laugh only irritated him. He was continually exhausted. The doctor found nothing wrong with him physically. When he became suicidal he started psychiatric counseling and anti-depressant medicine. Nothing seemed to help.

Then the young man sought spiritual counsel. When he allowed the Holy Spirit to convict him of the secret sin in his life, he was able to confess his sin and repent. With repentence and restoration the depression was gone and peace of mind returned. Phillipians 4:7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Isaiah 26:3 Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.

The second example I’ll use is from my husband, Fred. When Fred told me he was jealous of the way God is using me, I was able to honestly say; "Oh, honey, you have a servant’s heart. You have never met a stranger. You are able to see the soul and its need in everyone you meet. I tend to judge on outward appearances. I am a stronger Christian and better person because you are in my life."

We need to replace destructive words with constructive affirming words.

What does the Bible say about our minds? Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

II Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
