I’m sure if you have read any of the previous articles in this series that you realize that God doesn’t allow me to pray for my husband without personalizing the prayer. Where Fred has a need, I have a need. To pray for God to change Fred, without allowing God to change me would be very hypocritical. The first portion of this lesson is very hard for me. I want my husband to be healthy and active, but I would make a really good talking rock. I wonder if God needs a praying rock? I’ll just pray for Fred’s health but let’s forget about mine. Somehow, I don’t think that is going to work.

We all know the needs of a healthy body:

  • Rest-Do you get enough sleep?
  • Diet and hydration-Is your diet and fluid intake what it should be?
  • Exercise-When is the last time you exercised?
  • Cleanliness-This is probably the least likely to be a problem.
  • Physical Check-up-Nobody wants to, but it needs to be done.

If confession is good for the soul, this series of lessons is doing wonders for my soul! I’m very inactive.

Partially, I’m inactive because my health has never allowed me to participate in sports. However, the rest of the problem is that I’m lazy when it comes to doing anything physical. While there are many things that I can not do, there are also things that I could and should do. Recognizing your limitation should also illuminate your capabilities. I need an accountability partner for physical exercise. At my age I’m not going to suddenly love to exercise so I need someone to push me a little and to suffer with me.

Diet is another area of concern. We know about eating a healthy diet but have you noticed that the rules keep changing? Usually personal likes and dislikes, money, and health in that order determines our menus. We will shift the menu to put health first when a life threatening physical condition exists. A person that develops diabetes has little trouble changing their eating habits because their life depends on their diet. For most of us it is personal likes and cravings that dictate what we eat. Dare I say chocolate? We need to recognize food as the fuel for life and wisely choose the food we eat.

Hydration is also a major problem for most of us. I’ll admit I prefer my water flavored but for mental alertness as well as for healthy skin, hair, bowels, and urinary tract plain water much more effective. If you find yourself becoming tired or fuzzy headed during the day, drink a glass of water. Early symptoms of dehydration are tiredness, slowed thinking, and blurred vision.

It has been said, "A person will be as happy as they choose to be." What does this mean?

Proverbs 16:24 pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.

Proverbs 17:22 A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.
