Computer 101
When this web site was born I needed Computer 1--not 101. This graphic
was me! I 'heard' my computer laugh at me everyday. I frustrated everyone
with my incessant questions as I struggled to learn how to use this piece
of modern-day technology. I was constantly reminded by my son-who was
always fixing what I messed up-- that people my age should not own anything
more technological than a blender! C: His 'humor' about my ineptness...he
knew it would add to my determination to master "The Beast."
Felix, our web master, joined this 'cyber-adventure' a couple of months
after we began. He has a college degree in this stuff, is ever-patient
and very respectful of age (which I think helped sustain his patience
for me--I am his mother's age.) My only regret is that I do not have every
note from him that answered my unending questions of, "How do I _________?"
With ten months worth of those he could publish a book for anyone wanting
simple step-by-step answers--especially us baby boomer-technoilliterate-computer
guru-wanna be's! C:
All of us at Titus 2 trust that this section of our web site will help
many people who sense that they 'hear' their computers 'laughing' at them!

Cut and Paste:
This simple step has saved me hours of time. It is also the lesson that,
for some reason, was very hard for me to learn by e-mail.
- To highlight the text you want to move--hold down the left button
on your mouse and drag it across the text. Release that left button.
The text should remain highlighted.
- With the cursor on that highlighted area click the right button
on your mouse and then click on copy.
- Go to the document or e-mail (anywhere in your programs) where you
want to add the text that you just copied.
- Put the cursor where you want to paste the text and click the left
button on your mouse.
- Then click the right button and click on paste. Voila' !
Word Document:
When I started working on my book in Word I realized how little I knew
about the program. Oh, I had written articles from scratch in Word document
but when I started re-working what someone else originally typed it was
different. When I started cutting and pasting a volume of scripture to
the text I ended up with many styles and sizes of fonts, and a volume
of scripture references cut from Free Bible.com that were written in blue.
Many notes to people asking, "How do I?" helped me to learn
how to fix it all---or how I could have fixed it. I hope this may help
some of you.
- Change the font and/or size of font:
- Highlight the entire document. (With the curser at the beginning
of the text, left click on the mouse and drag the curser to the end
of the document. Release the left button on the mouse.) OR, for
Microsoft Word, you can click anywhere in the document, then while
holding down the ALT key and press (and release) the letter "a".
- Go up to the top of the document page and select the font and/or
size. Then anywhere in a blank spot on the screen left click the mouse.
- Justify the right margin or center the text:
- Highlight the entire document. (see above)
- Go to the top of the document page. Just to the right of center
(on the line where you can choose the font style and size) there are
four sets of lines. Each set of lines shows a different placement
of text on a page. Left click on the one that you want. The fourth
one is the one that makes the text even on the left and right margins.
The second one centers the text. Go to a blank part of the document
and left click your mouse and the text will be re-arranged.
- Changing text to a different color.
- Highlight the text that you want to make black--one word, sentence,
paragraph, or the entire document.
- Go to the top of the document page to the far right. You will see
a bold A with a black line under it (normally
the line is black). Left click the mouse on it and then click some
where in the document to unhighlight the text. The highlighted text
will then be black. To change to a new color, click to on the small
arrow to the right of the bold A. The arrow
is pointing down. This will display a color palette where you can
chose from several different colors. Click on the color you want.
The following step one above and step 2. This will change the text
to the color you selected.
- Numbers or bullets for setting apart text--like I am using now:
- Before typing a sentence that you want to set apart--or the first
sentence in a series--go to the top of the document page just to the
right of the section where it shows placement of text on a page. There
you will see 3 lines with numbers and 3 lines with bullets/dots. Click
on the format that you want and proceed writing your text. When you
hit enter and go to the next line the number or bullet will be there
to preceded your text.
- To end your list just hit enter and either backspace or go back
to the top of the document and left click over where you left clicked
before to release the button. You can also hit enter twice (without
typing any text) --- this method does add one blank line which you
may want to delete.
- Indented text--like the following line:
Go to the top of the document page and just to the right of the number
and bullet buttons there are two sets of lines with arrows. The right
arrow moves the text you will be typing to the right--like this section--and
the left arrow moves it back.
- To move existing text put your cursor at the beginning of the paragraph
that you want indented and left click on the right or left arrow (depending
on which way that you want it moved). You can also highlight the
text and then click on the arrow that you want. Then put your cursor
in a blank section on the page and left click. This also works for
bullet or numbered items.
- Highlight text in yellow:
- Left click and highlight the text that you want highlighted in
yellow.
- Go to the top of the page and you will see to left of the A
a picture of a magic marker with a yellow line under it. Click on
it and then put your cursor in a blank spot on the page and left click
your mouse. You can also change the highlight color by clicking
on the arrow immediately to the right of the magic marker. This will
display a color pallet where you can choose a color of your choice.
After choosing the new color, repeat steps one and two.
- In Word how do I print one or more pages of a long document?
- In Word, go to File-Print. On the left side you will see "Print
Range".
- Click the white dot next to "Pages:" so that option (circle)
is now black (selected).
- Then type in the page(s) you want to print. Word will print--for
example-- the page 39 if you type in 39. You can also print pages
1, 2, 3, 4, 10, and 15 by entering in: 1-4, 10,15.
If you have multiple pages with the same number, Word prints the first
page with that number. An alternative would be to highlight the pages
you want to print and then click on "Selection" instead
of "Print Range".
This technique works for other applications too.
How To Uninstall a Program?
- go under START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL
- Then ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS.
- Search for your program in the list and then click on the program
- Next, click on Add/Remove
- Then follow the instructions.
