My Garden

by Sharon Merhalski

I have always loved to create things from nothing-or very little. Today we have coined this creativity "trash to treasure"...or useable junk with a que "JUNQUE". Seven years ago I grew weary of looking at the ugliest yard I have ever seen...mine. After we purchased the home we had rented for three years I dug my first hole and placed something green in it! As I watched the first bloom open I was hooked and our yard started a metamorphosis.

Ours is not a small city lot with a 20'x20" garden space....which would be large for some homes. We live on an acre lot and this year I can finally say that I have landscaped half of it. My husband has dug a few holes and shoveled a lot of mulch but he would be the first to tell you that I am the gardener and he has done soooooooo little of this project...because he hates yard work.

I knew very little about gardening when I started this project. I can honestly say that I know a lot more now. A spring and a fall of being very ill and intently watching Home and Garden t.v. helped immensely. I hope I can pass along some of the stored information to help you and keep you from making some of the same mistakes that I made.

I cannot help but sit here and think about God and me....and how He brings us all from trash to treasure with His wonderful and free gift of salvation. I am thinking of how a merciful God practices such patience with His children....how He prepares the soil for our lives to grow deep roots in Him...how He weeds our lives of elements that will steal the nutrients that we need to grow strong...and will steal the water that we need to thrive with the Holy Spirit. We are a garden in the making......God's garden that is supposed to bloom and bring others much joy...a garden that is supposed to bear much fruit.
