![]() TIP OF THE DAY: Weed No Moreby Sharon Merhalski Do you hate to weed your flowerbeds? Weed no more! Place 3-4 sheets of newspaper (black and white sections) on your flowerbed. Leave about 2 inches around the base of each plant free of paper. Then add 3" -4" of mulch on top of the newspaper. The paper will kill the weeds that you covered with the paper...and prevent new ones from growing. As the paper disintegrates it becomes a good soil amendment. Paper bags from the grocery store are also good for this procedure. You can also use cardboard. If you want a more permanent solution between rows of hedges or vegetable garden paths you can use old carpet with a jute back. Place the jute back on the top...it is brown and needs little mulch to camouflage it! I HAVE DONE THIS TO LARGE AREAS O-V-E-R THE SOD...which dies and feeds the soil with rich nutrients.
