Devotion Four
"Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled." (v. 6)
What a blessed promise. We may, at sometime in our life, hunger and thirst,
and yet not find fulfillment, but the Lord promises that if we will hunger after
Him, as if we were starving, He will fill us with grace. If we will thirst after
Him as we would a drink of ice cold water on a terribly hot day, and after hours
in the sun, we will find refreshing in Him. That is how we must seek after Him,
as if we were desperate for His blessing, and, by the way, we are in dire need,
whether we know it or not.
In the Proverbs we see that we are to seek after wisdom, which is one of the great blessings that Jesus is to us, as if it were fine gold, or precious rubies
(Prov. 3:14, 15). We need to think of Him as a beautiful and precious gem which glistens and sparkles with the reflection of His grace into our lives. Mankind has went many miles, and forded many streams and suffered many things, even unto death, for gold and silver; we would do well to seek after Christ with the same enthusiasm. To "hunger" for Him is to feel a deep need for Him; to "thirst" is to desire Him more than any other thing in this world. Hunger and thirst are our most basic needs, they literally sustain life, while gold and precious gems are more of a desire than a necessity; we need to see Jesus in both respects though. The point is, if we seek Him with all our heart, we will find Him, and He will fill us with His love and grace. This is what Jesus meant in Mark 12:30 where He said "And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment."
Do we doubt that God is able to keep His promise? All we have to do is prove Him by seeking in the way He asks us to. We must develop a great hunger for His Word, and then thirst after the waters of life as if we could not live without it (and we can't, actually). The only way we will be able to accomplish this desire is to read, read, read the Word of God, and meditate upon His precepts, and saturate our lives in It.
