The staff of Titus 2 Men and Women.org was recently questioned about our belief in the "inner child" and "healing memories" psychology which caused me to do some research that I would not have done otherwise. I thought about the terms 'Inner Child' and 'healing memories'. My first instinct was: "I may be in big trouble here!" My definition or perception of an 'inner child' was our personal memory of childhood. Including dreams of what we hoped to be when we grew up. That part of each of us that sometimes wants to climb up on daddy's lap for a hug and rest. That if the individual's childhood memories included neglect or abuse they would probably have problems in the areas of trust, self worth, personal relationships, etc. That until the memories were faced in the light of the Bible, the sins called sin and dealt with, the problems would continue. That healing from the pain of those abusive memories was found in forgiving the perpetrator, seeking God's forgiveness for harboring negative reactions to the sin that was forced upon us, and determining to be usable to God in whatever area He may choose. When we were asked the question we were also given a list of scripture references so after considering my definitions,I looked up the list of scriptures. 2 Timothy 3:15-17 1 Corinthians 13:11 1 John 2:26-27 2 Corinthians 5:17 Philippians 3:13 They all fit my definitions. There are people who teach that Philippians 3:13 means that once you are saved you just stuff the hurt and get on with living a new life. There are some who counsel, "You're saved, get over it." I personally believe that part of "forgetting those things which are past" means not holding my sin or abuse up and declaring I was worse than you and God saved me. Too many people 'brag' about their past sins which in my opinion is wrong. People hear the stories and either get a vicarious thrill, lose respect for the individual, or use it as an excuse to go sin. (Jumping down off that soap box.) So what is the problem? I went and searched the terms "Inner Child" and "healing memories" on the internet. Whoops! These quotes should give the answers to the problem. I must say that there are different meanings among the clinicians but I did not find any definitions that match mine.
