Insect Repellants

Teddi Neevel

Insect Repellents

These helpful hints for dealing with mosquitoes and other biting insects came to me in an e-mail. I have personally only known of two of them previously.

NPR reports that if you eat bananas, the mosquitoes like you. (This is one that I have known for over 40 years. The only time mosquitoes like me is within 24 hours of eating banana)

One of the best natural insect repellants for mosquitoes and ticks is clear pure vanilla (not the grocery store vanilla extract which is mostly alcohol) mixed with equal parts water. This vanilla is sold in Mexico, on line and at some health food stores.

Use Bounce Fabric Softener Sheets ... just wipe the fabric sheet on your skin. (Beware of possible allergic reactions.)

One 100 mg vitamin B-1 tablet taken daily during bug season is said to work effectively. The odor the tablet gives out through your skin (YOU can not smell it) repels mosquitoes, black flies, no seeum's, and gnat's. It does not work on stinging insects.

It has been reported that one of the best insect repellants is Vick's Vaporub.

Many people say that the very best mosquito repellant you can use is Avon Skin-So-Soft bath oil mixed rubbed on the skin. (You need to be careful about using this around people with fragrance allergies.)
