Exodus 3
“And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.” (v.14)

God is teaching that he is the eternal “I AM”. All the ancient civilizations have had gods that they thought were immortal; immortality was then, the property of the gods, but our God reigned supreme above all others, in Egypt, and still exists today! I believe that Moses was wondering also when he asked God “What is his name? what shall I say unto them?” God taught Moses that he is the One and only supreme, God of gods, the Eternal One, as well as Pharaoh and all of Egypt later on. You see, Moses had to be convinced first.

Moses met God in the burning bush. The bush that was on fire, but did not burn up! It was an unusual sight indeed, and drew the curiosity of Moses. God performed a miracle to get His man’s attention, and to call him to special service. We should become as the bush, and burn for the Lord, but never “burn out”, but that is another subject for another time. When Moses was commanded to go before Pharaoh, he needed a little prompting. He had not yet known the Lord, or met with Him, and he needed to know just how great He was. He needed to know the eternal, living and all powerful God, and here he learns that he was not dealing with some false, conjured up god of the Egyptians, but the Lord of all creation. As far as we know, Moses never had to tell Pharaoh these words, but he did go in the confidence that he was representing the Eternal One, in fact, he went to the children of Israel and told them Whom had sent him, and that it was the God of their forefathers. Though Pharaoh asked “Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the LORD, neither will I let Israel go.”, and from this time on, the battle had begun. Moses never did tell Pharaoh that the Great I AM sent him, but he knew himself who had commissioned him.

Our text verse though was in response to the question “And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?” (v. 13). God has the answer to all our questions. He answers simply here, and yet profoundly. He is that He is, and that is all there is to it. He is the ever-existing One, the God of gods, the eternal “I am”. Moses seemed more concerned about his brethren believing him than he seemed to be about Pharaoh!
He knew they would question his authority, but he had to go and do what the Lord commanded him to do, and the reward was great indeed.
