Articles Of Hope For - Stress Management
Written by Sharon Merhalski
1. MASSAGE THERAPY: In a study of people with low back pain, those who underwent massage therapy not only experienced less back pain, but they also experienced less depression and anxiety and enjoyed better sleep quality when compared to people using non-massage forms of relaxation.

2. COUNTING YOUR BLESSINGS: In one study, people who recorded in a journal the things in their lives they were grateful for experienced heightened feelings of well-being. The people who recorded problems or neutral life events in their journals did not.

3. TIME WITH YOUR PETS: Pets can help lower stress, according to study findings. When at rest, pet owners had much lower heart rates and blood pressure levels than did their non-pet-owning peers, as reported in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine. The researchers suggest that the reason why pets had such a positive effect on their owners' stress reactions may be because owners tend to view pets as totally accepting and supportive. Pets may not be for everyone. However, if you like animals and have time for them you may want to consider the potential health advantages of their company.

4. DON'T FIXATE ON THE STOCK MARKET: Researchers have found that close daily monitoring of volatile financial affairs may not be good for your mental health. The researchers noted that those who did choose to closely follow the stock market generally had the poorest mental health. Especially in those who also felt they lacked control over their economic environment. The team concluded that individuals in situations they feel they cannot control might do themselves a big psychological favor by stepping back rather than focusing on them too closely.

5. CUT BACK ON CAFFEINE: People who consume caffeine may experience an increase in blood pressure, feel more stressed and produce more stress hormones than on days when they opt for decaf. Therefore, those with conditions that are aggravated by stress, or have high blood pressure, might try to cut back on caffeine and see if that helps alleviate their symptoms. People with stress-related disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder or social anxiety, could also experience adverse effects from caffeine consumption. Cutting out caffeine may make you feel better so it's worth a try.

6.STRETCH :  Sitting upright on a chair, and keeping your back straight, extend your arms out in front of you as far as possible. Hold for ten seconds. Repeat, with your arms behind you. Then hold on to the sides of your chair and push your body upwards. Feel your spine stretch. Hold for ten. Now stretch arms to the ceiling, to release tension in back and shoulders. Relax and shake your arms.

7. PLAN BREAKS IN YOUR DAY:  The aim here is to allow time for the unexpected (which, as we all know, will happen!). Get up 15 minutes earlier than you think you need to and prepare for the day without rushing. Even better, get things ready the night before. Try to have 20 minutes in the morning and afternoon that is exclusively ‘your’ time, in which you can do whatever you want, even if it is simply sitting doing nothing.

8. DE-CLUTTER :  Stress is a major contributing factor to poor health. Physical clutter adds to that stress, often without your knowledge. Mess creates confusion and a sense of loss of power. If your desk/home/car is messy and disorganized, have a good clear out and tidy up. You’ll instantly feel less stressed and more in control.  Clutter has no conscience. It interacts with all of the other types of clutter to make your life a vicious cycle. In other words, clutter produces clutter. Here’s how it works: Physical clutter produces mental clutter, mental clutter produces time clutter, time clutter produces emotional clutter, and the circle never ends. Here are some excellent tips to put you on the road to a clutter-free life:
A.) Start small – pick a corner or a closet to start with.

B.) Designate a home for each item that you bring into your home before it enters.

C.) Ask yourself 1. Have I used it, looked at it, or picked it up within the past year?

D.) Do I REALLY value this item? 3. Will I ever use it again?

E.) For future purchases, ask yourself while in the store “where am I going to put this in my home?” If you do not have an answer, then don’t buy it! It’s really that simple.  It may feel like a sacrifice at first, but as you see less and less clutter in your life, it becomes exhilarating!

9. CHANGE THE HABIT:  Many stresses are habitual. If you start to feel anxious or stressed out, do something out of character. Stop what you’re doing and do something else. Or take a minute to take stock and work out why you’re feeling uptight.

10. THINK POSITIVE:  Renew your mind–keep your minds on whatever is true, pure, right, holy, friendly, and proper. Don’t ever stop thinking about what is truly worthwhile and worthy of praise. Philippians 4:8  Use ‘affirmations’ – true and positive strands of thought put into words to alleviate stress. For the child of God use Bible truths and remind yourself of how cherished you are by God.  See verses below*.

AND ONE THING NOT TO DO…
One approach to avoid, is that of using smoking and alcohol as crutches to help you cope – in the long run they simply make stress worse. Drinking more to ‘calm your nerves’ is a slippery slope.
