Job Opening: Neighbor-builder! PDF Print

Romans 15:2 “Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification.”

Strong’s Concordance: edification…architecture, that is, (concretely) a structure; figuratively confirmation: - building, edify (-ication, -ing).

The Clark Bible Commentary says of this verse: The strong should bear the infirmities of the weak, and each strive to please, not himself, but his neighbor, after the example of Christ.

We are to be a neighbor-builder!

Some people are bodybuilders. Some people are homebuilders. Some people are business-builders. However, the one place we can put our time, money and effort into that will last forever is in being a people-builder...and this job opportunity is wide open!

Parents reap the rewards from being children-builders. Spouses reap the rewards from being a spouse-builder. However there are a whole lot of people who are our “neighbors” that also need our architectural and construction skills.

How are we to ‘build’ people? Ephesians 4:32 "And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you." We edify/build people by doing unto other people what we would like done unto us and by giving them what they need, not always what they deserve. Jesus built people by challenging, encouraging and speaking honestly to others.

Ephesians 4:1-2  "I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing (longsuffering and patience) one another in love;"

Edifying/building up one another with meekness, longsuffering, patience and love is a calling of God…a calling not to waste our lives. May we all look for ways to challenge others to stretch/press forward in their lives by discovering their gifts and talents…and the things that need to be changed or repented of.

We all need somebody who will help us discover our gifts and who will challenge us to develop, strengthen, and use them. You can play a critical role in this way by helping the ones you love to discover their strengths and abilities, and the work at challenging them to use them.

Help everyone understand how special their gifts are—that we will all miss out on a blessing if they don't use the gifts God has given them. It's like a singer who never sings; we miss out on the blessing that would come from hearing the voice. We are meant to be a blessing to others.
